Arrive in community
The activation is built around a specific place and the people living with the consequences of gun violence there.
Murals built to be seen, felt, signed, and impossible to ignore.
Walls of Demand is Change The Ref's nationwide public-art activation: live murals and participatory installations that turn walls into visible demands for an end to gun violence.

WHAT IT IS
Manuel and Patricia Oliver began traveling with live mural activations soon after Joaquin was killed. The walls combine portraiture, graphic language, symbols, paint, collage, and direct demands for action.
The project is intentionally public. People gather while the work is created, hear the story, and are often invited to sign, write messages, or leave their own mark. The wall becomes both artwork and a temporary civic space.
HOW THE IDEA WORKED
CTR initiatives are designed to do more than communicate. Each one creates a path from attention to participation, accountability, remembrance, or action.
The activation is built around a specific place and the people living with the consequences of gun violence there.
Manuel builds the imagery live, turning the act of making art into part of the protest itself.
Community members can witness, respond, sign, and help turn the finished wall into a shared demand rather than a private artwork.
IMPACT
Walls of Demand has appeared in communities across the country, including Los Angeles, New York, Springfield, Orlando, Dallas, Philadelphia, and other cities. The project helped establish the visual language that continues to define Change The Ref.
Walls of Demand is one of CTR's earliest and most enduring expressions of “artivism”: use the wall as a microphone, the making process as a gathering, and the finished image as a demand that stays behind.
